Scientific Name:
Spider mites are members of the Acari (mite) family, Tetranychidae, which includes about 1,200 species.
Nickname: Spider Mite
Appearance/Size:
Spider mites are less than 1 millimeter (0.04 in) in size and vary in color. They lay small, transparent eggs and many species spin silk webbing; they get the ‘spider’ part of their common name from this webbing.
Spider mites love a warm, dry climate. Humidity is a great defense against them, as it dramatically slows down their reproductive rate. They are normally foundon the underside of leaves, where they lay their eggs.
Eggs hatch in 3 days, and sexually mature in 5 days. One female lays up to 20 eggs per day and can live for 2 to 4 weeks, laying hundreds of eggs. A single mature female can spawn a population of a million mites in a month or less.
