Fungus Gnats are Harmful To Plants

Bradysia impatiens Family: Mycetophilidae

Nickname: Fungus Gnat

Appearance/Size:

Mosquito-like insects that are active in the summer. Adults are grayish or black and are 1/8 to 1/10 inches long.

Prefered Habitat:

Fungus gnats typically inhabit moist, warm, shaded areas. Some common hosts include: fungi, decaying wood, bedding plants, and foliage plants.

Reproduction:

The average adult life is only about 1 week (entire life 3-4 weeks), laying up to 250 eggs in that time, hatching in as little as 3 days. Larvae will live 1-2 weeks, feeding in the soil before emerging into an adult.

Eat:

Larvae eat organic material and nutrients in the soil, often hurting root tissue in plants. Adults are free living organisms and spend the majority of their adult life looking for a partner to reproduce with.
