Cadinene

Cadinene is a lesser known sesquiterpene

Identified in trace amounts within certain cannabis strains. Two structural isomers occur: alpha-cadinene and gamma-cadinene.

This terpenoid has an aromatic profile often described as dry-woody, earthy and slightly spicy with floral hints. Some also detect traces of citrus, pine or pepper. It has a moderately intense odor.

Beyond cannabis, cadinene appears across a vast array of plants but most prevalently in cade juniper trees, Dipteryx odorata seeds and Citrus aurantifolia (key lime) leaves.

While substantial research is lacking, cadinene shows early promise exhibiting these properties:

• Potent antimicrobial qualities against various bacterial and fungal strains
• Demonstrated anti-inflammatory activities comparable to over-the-counter options
• Appears to repel certain insect pests as an ecological defense
• Indications of antiprotozoal effects against malaria

Despite minimal concentrations, cadinene likely still plays a supporting role in cannabis’ aromatic diversity through possible synergistic interplay with more abundant terpenoids. Traces may provide some relaxing qualities. Further phytochemical analysis is warranted.
