Bisabolene

Bisabolene is a lesser-known terpenoid

It has been identified in small concentrations within certain cannabis varieties. As a sesquiterpene, its backbone structure contains 15 carbons.

This phytochemical carries a sweet, tropical fruity floral scent often compared to mango, papaya or bergamot. Some also detect creamy and citrusy impressions in its aroma profile.

Aside from cannabis, bisabolene occurs naturally in various plant sources - most prevalently in candeia trees, carrot seeds, frankincense resin and the essential oils of rose hip and bergamot fruit.

Early research suggests bisabolene may confer a range of therapeutic characteristics:

• Powerful antimicrobial properties against certain bacterial strains
• Demonstrates substantial anti-inflammatory activities
• Acts as a natural insect repellant in ecological defense
• Exhibits gastroprotective effects in mouse models

While typically not the primary terpene in a given chemovar, bisabolene likely plays an important supporting role influencing the overall aroma and modulating bioactivity of more abundant compounds via entourage effects. Further investigation into cannabis terpene interactions is warranted.
