Alpha-humulene

Alpha-humulene is a common terpenoid

Across many cannabis cultivars though not typically the predominant one. It falls under the sesquiterpene designation, having a 15-carbon backbone rather than the 10 carbons in monoterpenes.

This terpene has a notably earthy, woody aroma with subtle spicy, hoppy hints similar to its cousin beta-caryophyllene. Some also pick up traces of ginger or ginseng. The scent is relatively mild but distinctive.

Alpha-humulene occurs abundantly in nature, most notably within the flower clusters emitted by mature female hop plants. That’s where the distinctive name Humulus lupulus originates from for the common hop species used in beer brewing.

Research has shown alpha-humulene possesses a range of potentially beneficial characteristics:

• Demonstrates substantial anti-inflammatory activity comparable to pharmaceutical options
• Exhibits antibacterial properties against certain pathogens
• Appears to suppress appetite signaling pathways in the body
• Shows cytotoxic activity inducing apoptosis in some cancer lines

So while humulene may play a supporting role among the bouquet of cannabis, it carries desirable bioactive qualities warranting further scientific investigation. The earthy aroma likely imparts some calming effects as well.
